Scariest airplane landings

2013-07-25 16:17

After the shocking crash landing of Asiana flight 214 at San Francisco Airport earlier this month, that jittery feeling that normally goes with take-offs and landings has probably been amplified somewhat for many travellers.

So, just to bring a bit of confidence back to the general air travelling population, we've decided to gather three of the most insanely scary landings, all pulled off with flying colours by the pilots in charge.

Take a look:

No visibility

Taken from within the cockpit of a Boeing Business Jet and uploaded to YouTube in June, this video shows how a potential disastrous situation is narrowly avoided when the pilot loses complete visibility due to fog mere moments before touching down on the tarmac.

Battling crosswinds

Germany's Dusseldorf Airport is notorious among pilots for the highwinds that can reach up to 101km/h, making a smooth landing practically impossible. One such landing was caught on camera by Martin Bogdan in 2012.

No nose gear

Pilots aboard Iran Air Flight 742 managed to pull of the impossible in October 2011, when they made an impeccable emergency landing at Mehrabad International Airport with no nose gear. In other words, there were no wheels at the front of the plane to support the aircraft while landing. All 113 people aboard survived... and to be honest, it hardly looks like too much of a rough landing from this footage.
