Cape Town – The cost of flying in South Africa has become a bit of sore point in recent years, as even our budget airlines tend to charge exorbitant fees – especially on last minute bookings.

So, it really comes as no surprise that neither kulula nor Mango made it onto a list of the top 15 cheapest airlines in the world, put together by flight comparison site,

Travel and Tour World reports that the list of of international airlines ranked budget carriers based on averages from more than 3 220 000 flight prices found on the flight comparison site from June 2014 and later.

While South African airlines may not have made the cut, pan-African newcomer, fastjet was ranked fifth cheapest. Interestingly, it is the only African airline to have made it in.

The list is dominated by Eastern airlines, with Turkey being the country represented most strongly, as it boasts no less than three airlines in the top 10.
