Tanzania - Africa-focused, low cost airline fastjet has announced a record breaking performance for its festive season December period.

Ed Winter, the airline’s chief executive said, "Our yield and total revenue figures for the month were excellent and the performance on our established routes during the important Christmas period was better than expected.

The airline reported its highest number of passengers in one month since it first started operations, servicing a total of 37 000 passengers in December and achieving an average load factor of 71 percent.

fastjet also increased its total revenue for the month, exceeding $3 million, to $3.6-million for the first time since the start of operations. The airline also almost doubled its yield per passenger at US$97, against US$50 a year ago.

The airline increased its Dar es Salaam to Mbeya route at the beginning of December  from three to four flights per week and then went to daily flights from the16th December. Despite these capacity increases, the route achieved average load factor of 68% for the full month.

Fastjet also operates international flights between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg . Tickets are currently on sale for the new route to Lusaka, set to start at the beginning of February b

Winter added that the strong performance of the Dar es Salaam to Mbeya route shows how well the low cost model can work in Africa.

“Our low fares have stimulated the market and provided a real option for the huge, pent-up demand on this route.

“Based on our achievements in 2013, as we enter 2014 I am very optimistic about the prospect of Fastjet rolling out the low cost model on many more routes.“
