Yes, winter in Joburg can be bitterly cold. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors and hide from the elements, wrapped up in a blanket while sipping on Rooibos … JHB Live rounded up a range of winter-friendly options that are worth braving the weather for.

Air Cinema Club

Air Cinema Club is a brand new, Braamfontein-based initiative that’s launching on 30 May on the rooftop of the Neighbourgoods Market (73 Juta Street). Yes, rooftops generally equal cold in the winter months, but the guys behind this event will ever-so-thoughtfully be taking care of that with plenty of glühwein, hot chocolate, gourmet burgers and the option to bring your own treat-filled cooler box (at an extra fee). The movie they’ll be screening under the stars is Ken Loach's The Angels' Share, which was a Cannes Film Festival official selection in 2012. Tickets can be booked through Webtickets and cost between R120 and R170.

Stanley Beer Yard

The new kid on the 44 Stanley block is a great escape from the chill. If you feel like staying home and drinking beer in your living room, but don’t want to become a hermit for the entire season, this is a great option. And it’s probably nicer than your couch, anyway. They serve up a range of craft beer and food (think along the lines of prego rolls). Curl up on someone else’s couch and make yourself at home! You might even walk in on an intimate gig.

We all know how the gyms get progressively emptier as summer slips away and bodies can be hidden under layers. If you’re looking for a lil’ motivation to get going, Cocoon, in The Maboneng Precinct, boasts an infrared yoga studio (the first in Joburg). Confused? Well, essentially it means you get to give those chilly bodies a well-deserved stretch in a glowing plywood room. The beauty of infrared is that it lets your body warm the room, allowing for detox, improved flexibility and increased circulation. And, if you feel like treating yourself afterwards, they do all the usual beauty bits on site, too. Take a look at the full Cocoon schedule. The surrounding restaurants and bustling Sunday Market on Main offer gourmet eats, drinks and gems – a must!

The Griffin

Illovo’s gastropub is a little bit of London in our concrete jungle. The concept has clearly taken off – The Griffin gets so packed that all you have to do is step inside to be engulfed by warmth. Fine, it’s due to the fullness (therefore body heat), but there is a reason it gets so busy. It’s a place to drink (craft beers, naturally), munch on local, free range 'conscious-cuisine' and just hang out.

Let’s face it, for most people, few things are less appealing than salads in winter. Exit the diet and enter Piccolinos. This irie oasis, nestled in the northern suburbs, offers cheesy goodness worth what our writer calls the ‘white knuckle drive’. A pizza place people are willing to brave traffic for? Impressive. Check it out and eat yourselves warm.

Tra Amici

Tra Amici (which means ‘food among friends’) is not your typical lunchtime destination. It’s a hole-in-the-wall, pop-up buffet eatery right next door to the Rosebank Fire Station. Every Tuesday, from 12:00 ‘til 14:00, the Italian catering company fills a tiny room with a spread like no other, and it changes from week to week. It’s simple – buy a box and fill it with whatever you want (or as much as you can). Warning: you WILL overeat. Their latest venture is Gourmet Italian Burger Friday, which also runs weekly, from 12:00 to 15:00.

And there you have it. There are reasons to leave the couch after all …
