Jozi Winter Warmers

2013-07-04 13:56
Whatsup Jozi! The great thing about winters up here is that although it can get rather nippy, there is not the ever pressing threat of rain like in Cape Town or Durbs. So put on a jersey or two, we have some ideas on how to get rid of the Highveld chills that don't necessarily include going to a mall.

Family Fun

Longing to get your kids away from the TV? Start simple. Head towards the Zoo, where kids do not merely have to marvel at the beasts of the animal kingdom but can pet and cuddle the smaller animals. Afterwards why not feed the ducks and row a boat on Zoo Lake, so that you may take full advantage of that midday sun. If your kids still haven't had their fill of animals, there is Drake's Party Farmyard and the Animal and Reptile Park Zoo in Muldersdrift.

For the kids who are slightly older, Go-Karting at Randburg Raceway, or Laser Quest at Brightwater commons and Boogaloos Skateboarding Park at Montecasino will get them away from their Playstations, and out of the house, at least for the afternoon. Then there is always Gold Reef City, with its terrifying, interesting and exciting rides to bring your family closer together.

If this does little to excite your intellectually starved child, there is Art Fun at the Colour Café in Hyde Park, where kids create and paint pottery, or let them take a class at the Parktown Youth Theatre. There are daily shows at the Planetarium in Braamfontein, a mini version of Johannesburg to discover in Wemmer Pan and a scientific wonder world at the Sci-Bono discovery centre in Newtown.

Although snuggling up with your book is great, why not bring the pages to life by visiting these great places of knowledge. Maropeng's Cradle of Humankind is an interactive treasure trove that profiles our planet, and our own coming of age. With its ice tunnels and holographs it is truly a learning adventure. The Sammy Marks Museum is the meticulously preserved mansion of a self made millionaire from the Victorian era who played host to both the Boer and the English generals during the South African war. Draadsitter!

The Apartheid Museum is a must for a comprehensive and chilling glimpse into our country's past, poignantly illustrating the disarray we have emerged from. Do some extra homework by visiting the Hector Pieterson Memorial and journey into the heartland of where ‘the struggle' actually took place. Finally round off your trip with a visit to SAB World of Beer to reward your ever expanding mind with the story of how your favorite drink has come to exist.

For a relaxed and fun dining environment why not visit; Chefs in Motion, where you can see the cooks prepare your food, Gramadoelas at the Market Theatre, that offers the finest selection of mixed foods from the city's cosmopolitan trading past or make a day of it at Mrs Sippi Blues Dining Farm.

Then finally to settle your sweet tooth, visit Geldhof Chocolatier, whose recipes are a secret known only to a few. With tips and recipes on how to make the most delicious of hot chocolates, you'll be sure to make this winter one to remember.
