Looking for something completely different to impress friends, colleagues or family?

You'll be pleased to hear that Canopy Tours South Africa have just announced the launch of full moon tours at the Karkloof Canopy Tour in KwaZulu-Natal. This is to celebrate Karkloof Canopy Tour's ten year anniversary, as well as provide you the adventurer with a new night-time activity.

Canopy Tours lets you enter a previously inaccessible realm of nature through secure platforms, built high within the upper levels of indigenous forests or against the cliffs of ancient mountains. These are joined by spectacular long cable slides high above the forest floor.

Once a month, the full moon tour will see you sliding through the forest and over the top of moonlit treetops - it all ends off with a specially prepared fire-side dinner on the edge of the forest.

So how exactly did the concept of swinging through the trees come about?

It was first developed by adventurous biologists who want to explore the lush rain forests of Costa Rica. Through an intricate system of cables and platforms the upper level canopy of these forests opened up the study of an entirely new ecosystem.

It wasn’t long before this developed into a breathtaking eco-tourism activity that not only allows people to enter and experience the upper realm of a rainforest, but raises awareness about the plight and beauty of the world’s endangered forests.

Safety is paramount and the Canopy Tours have been built in accordance with strict civil engineering standards. Rigorous maintenance schedules have been put in place to ensure the long term safety of each system.

You may prefer flying along the slides with the wind in your hair, or else it will be relaxing and absorbing the tranquillity of your natural surroundings on each of the platforms that you'll remember most.

Trained canopy guides ensure the safety of each group while describing interesting facts about the fauna, flora and ecology of the surrounding environment.

Suitable for anyone between the ages of 5 and 75, Canopy Tours are great for the whole family, nature lovers, thrill seekers and corporate groups!

A Canopy Tour currently costs R450pp and includes all equipment, 4x4 vehicle ride into the forest, trained nature guides, the tour itself, refreshments and a light lunch.

There are currently six Canopy Tour locations in the country – Tsitsikamma (Garden Route); Karkloof (Natal Midlands); Magaliesberg (Gauteng/North-West); Magoebaskloof (Limpopo); Drakensberg (KZN) and Malolotja (Swaziland). Each Canopy Tour takes place in a completely different environment and is a unique experience on its own. A seventh Canopy Tour is being built at the moment on the outskirts of Cape Town and will open in January 2014.

The Canopy Tours Frequent Flyer program now allows clients to receive discounts on subsequent Canopy Tours, culminating in your 4th Canopy Tour for free!
