2014: your guide to public holidays

2014-01-21 12:35
So the year is still baby fresh, but chances are things at work are wilting fast.

What better way to get over the office blues, than starting the plans for your next getaway?

Whether you're thinking of a weekend retreat or a week-long sojourn, dreaming up your holiday is fun but the planning and logistics aren't always.

To help you get over the "when-to-go" hurdle we've put together a holiday calendar, complete with public and school holidays - parents out there will know forethought and planning is the key to retaining all sanity.

Childless souls the same sentiment applies to you - you know, so you can avoid the youngens invasion altogether.

March to May - School Holidays:  29 Mar -  6 Apr for all provinces (29, 30 April and 2 May are extra school holidays)

Public holidays and long weekends:

Friday 21 March - Human Rights Day

Friday 18 April - Good Friday

Monday 21  April - Easter Monday/ Family Day

Sunday 27 April rolled over to Monday 28 April - Freedom Day

Thursday 1 May - Worker's Day

Our suggestions: Check out one of these 12 local festivals worth your time and effort

Although we don't all celebrate the Christian holiday, it is a great time for moments with those near and dear. What sucks a little though is that the Easter weekend is like a mini-December break with all of the traffic bells and crowd whistles associated with it.

If you're opting for an Easter weekend at home - you may want to plan for an extended break around Freedom Day on 27 April and Worker's Day on 1 May, since 29, 30 April and 2 May have been included as extra school holidays.

June to August -  School Holidays: 28 Jun - 20 Jul for all provinces

Public holidays and long weekends:

Monday 16 June - Youth Day

Saturday 9 August - Women's day

Our suggestions: Take some time out in the Bush

For many of us winter is the season we all love to hate.  Sure there's heaps of snuggling and cuddling but the options might be a bit limited when it comes to venturing out. In South Africa, that really depends on where you are. While the coastal areas become wet and windy the Bush is pleasant - albeit the bone-crushing coldness in the early hours of the morning and at night.

This year there is a long weekend to look forward to in June, even if Women's Day is a lost cause since it falls on a Saturday.

Take advantage of some down time in the bush or even go to see snow in the mountains. Don't forget to send us your pics!

September to November -  School holidays: 4 to 12 October for all provinces.

Public Holiday and long weekends:

Wednesday 24 September - Heritage day.

Our Suggestions: Consider an off-peak Island Escape

Put in for a few extra days leave to make the most of Heritage day with a mid-week break.

Go explore your country, which is finally shaking off the winter cold. September is also World Tourism Month, so  you can expect a few awesome packages, aimed at getting you to explore your South African roots more, to start doing the rounds.

Otherwise, splash out on an exotic escape where you need little more than a swimsuit and a bottle of suntan lotion.

December -  School Holidays: 11 December 2014 to 13 January 2015 for inland provinces

Public Holidays and long weekends:

Tuesday 16 December - Reconciliation day

Thursday 25 December - Christmas Day

Friday26 December - Day of goodwill

Our suggestions: You should be all set to head to one of these 21 destinations pegged as a must-visit in 2014

While it's not quite time for a festive freak out just yet, it's still January after all, we thought we would just list the days so that you could file it in the bottom drawer of your mind.

However if you are planning an epic escape for the end of the year, there is no time like the present to start chipping away at the planning or saving required to make it a reality.

And then finally, if you are looking for any excuse to celebrate, remember these:

St Valentine's Day -  Friday 14 February
St Patrick's Day -  Monday 17 March
Mother's Day - Sunday 11 May
Father's Day - Sunday 15 June
Secretary's Day - Wednesday 3 September
Bosses Day - Thursday 16 October
Halloween - Friday 31 October
Guy Fawkes Night - Wednesday 5 November
