Cape Town - Yup, winter is definitely here. We're sure you can feel it. Days are shorter, nights are longer, the sun only rises at 7 am, and well, it's much colder. And yes, we know that a lot of people treat winter like that unwanted kid that joins your group for a class project, but we, as travellers, feel that there are some really cool things about winter and travelling. There are the lucky few that agree with us, but if you happen to be a summer lover who just can't stand it anymore, here is all the convincing you need...While most people give winter the side eye like this......Because the thought of the cold has them feeling like this...Here are five reasons why travelling in winter is quite awesome:1. Travel/hotel rates are lower.Yes, that’s right. Because the rest of the world is somehow addicted to the sun and its heat, people travel less in winter (why are people so crazy), and winter spells off peak season.2. Gorgeous clothes! Have you seen the kind of clothes you can wear in winter? Beanies, gloves, boots, socks (lots and lots of socks) and so many other cool clothing items make winter not only glorious, but fashionable. The fun about layering is that you get to peel it off... 3. Starting a fire is completely normal/acceptable and coolFireplaces and bonfires during hiking trips are totally cool! Lighting up a fireplace is actually hot (no pun intended) and all together different to starting a braai - which means you can add to the romantic vibes while on holiday with your loved one quite easily. Also see: Snow on Table Mountain4. Snow becomes a real thingHow cool is it that winter allows one to experience that snow we always see on Christmas movies? It might not be as hectic, but it's great that it actually fuels awesome winter activities like snowboarding and skiing, right here in the Southern Hemisphere. Whoop!5. Food tastes sooo much better in winter!Maybe it's your mind playing tricks on you, or that food really gets some extra dazzle from the cold, but soup in summer is not as glorious as soup in winter. Similarly, you cannot even think of that great oxtail homemade meal in summer, right? It just doesn't work. So imagine all the glory your tastebuds get to bask in when you travel to different locations and try out different foods next to a fireplace (reason 3) in your really awesome winter clothes (reason 2)?To make things better, if you're in Cape Town for winter, the V & A Waterfront has some awesome winter food specials that are so awesome.
