25 Most popular destinations for Facebook in 2013

Cape Town - Facebook has listed the 25 places that users most frequently check into around the world - with the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront topping the list for South Africa's most checked-in place.

The list details top checked in places in 25 of the countries with the most active Facebook users in 2013 - but excludes transportation hubs.

Facebook posted the data, which it said looked at which places generated the most check-ins in 2013 and generated the following country-level rankings list.

Other places on the African continent include on the list include Ikeja City Mall in Lagos, Nigeria and  Sharm el-Sheikh, South Sinai Governorate in Egypt.

Travel is the second most talked about life event on Facebook, topped only by relationship updates such "in a relationship, got engaged or got married".

The full list of the 25 most-checked into destinations is below:

Argentina: Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires
Australia: Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), East Melbourne, Victoria
Brazil: Parque Ibirapuera, São Paulo
Canada: Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia
Egypt: Sharm el-Sheikh, South Sinai Governorate, Egypt
France: Disneyland Paris, Marne La Vallée
Germany: Reeperbahn, Hamburg
Hong Kong: Hong Kong Disneyland
Iceland: Blue Lagoon, Reykjavík, Iceland
India: Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple)
Italy: Piazza San Marco, Venice
Japan: (Tokyo Disneyland), Tokyo
Mexico: Auditorio Nacional, Mexico City
Nigeria: Ikeja City Mall, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria
