8 signs you're a travel snob

2013-09-25 11:10

As with any hobby, field of interest or passion, there are an astounding variety of personalities who pursue a lifestyle that includes travel and lots of it.

There are the planners and the happy-go-luckies, the neurotic and the down-to-earth, the digital nomads and the digital detoxers... the list goes on and on.

But among all the different personalities, there's one that other travellers love to hate and hate to envy... the travel snob. That know-it-all who's been everywhere and got there in the most unconventional fashions possible. You know that person - the one whose pompous travel stories you can't bear to hear, but find yourself hanging on every word anyway.

While you certainly don't want to be that guy, there's always the danger of falling into the travel snob trap if you've done a fair amount of globetrotting.

Here's an eight-point test to see how far gone you are.

Your reaction when people tell you they're going on an all-inclusive resort holiday in Phuket, Thailand

The look you and your travel partner exchange when someone says they prefer luxury to backpacking

You'd much rather spend a week being the sad guy on the left than ever having to board a cruise ship

A friend of a friend (they were a friend once, but not anymore) tells you they'll be spending their two week holiday just relaxing at home...

Someone tries to coerce you into taking a Red Bus Tour.

When you realise the restaurant a trusted fellow backpacker swore would be totally obscure and without tourists, has been discovered... by everyone. Even old people wearing socks and sandals.

You feel like a failure if you return from a trip that went smoothly from start to finish. No dodgy taxi rides, no getting stuck on mountains, no Delhi belly. Seriously?! That's not travel!

How you feel when you return from a journey that others would call "THE WORST TRIP EVER" - missed flights, flea-ridden hostel beds, crowded chicken bus journeys, missed flights. BEST!
