And the top 20 cities for travellers in 2014 are...

Cape Town – No matter the gloomy weather or the fact that most things are kind of expensive, London has been ranked the most popular destination for tourists in 2014.

The UK capital came out tops in MasterCard’s Global Destination Cities Index, outperforming the likes of New York, Bangkok, Rome and Dubai.

Now in its fourth year, the index provides a ranking of the 132 most travelled cities from around the world in terms of the number of their total international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending by these same visitors.

According to the study, London is projected to receive 18.7 million international visitors in 2014, pushing it into the top position ahead of last year’s winner, Bangkok by some 300 000 incoming tourists.

While we’re slightly disappointed that our very own Cape Town didn’t make it into the top 20, it’s still rather interesting to see which cities did make the cut.

Here they are:

1. London 18.69 million

2. Bangkok 16.42 million

3. Paris 15.57 million

4. Singapore 12.47 million

5. Dubai 11.95 million

6. New York 11.81 million

7. Istanbul 11.60 million

8. Kuala Lumpur 10.81 million

9. Hong Kong 8.84 million

10. Seoul 8.63 million

11. Barcelona 7.37 million

12. Amsterdam 7.23 million

13. Milan 6.82 million

14. Rome 6.79 million

15. Taipei 6.29 million

16. Shanghai 6.09 million

17. Vienna 6.05 million

18. Riyadh 5.59 million

19. Tokyo 5.38 million

20. Lima 5.11 million
