Around 7 continents on a bicycle

2013-07-12 15:31
Taking a trip around the world, touching down on each and every continent, is probably one of the most common bucket list items among hardcore travellers.

However, doing it by bicycle? Well, that's just for the crazy and the super courageous.

In September this year, two young South Africans are going to show their mettle when they take on the challenge of a bicycle journey around all seven continents.

We caught up with De Bruyn Joubert and Ulrich Walters to find out more about their wild endeavour.

1. Can you give us a quick rundown about yourselves and what ‘Around 7 Continents' is?

In September we will start our Around 7 Continents Adventure in Sydney, Australia and continuously cycle through all the continents on earth.

7 Continents, 70 Countries, 85 000km in 5 years

De Bruyn - I have been an entrepreneur from an early age and started my first business when I was 15. I like to take calculated risks, push myself to new limits and rise above them!

Ulrich - Im a professional photographer passionate about traveling. Around 7 Continents is about reaching personal goals, inspire people to do more, travel and not to be scared to try the "impossible".

2. Obviously you won't be able to cycle ALL the way - where will you be alighting from your bike to catch a different kind of transport?

We will cycle each kilometer on the continents as planned. We need alternative transport between continents.

• Cape Town - Sydney (Flight, to start our adventure)
• Perth - Ireland (Flight)
• Russia - Alaska (Boat)
• South America - Africa (Flight or Boat)
• Antarctica (Flights)

3. Travel arrangements could be a potential nightmare - how are you going about it? Could you share some tips with our readers?

We've been planning this for a long time. Research and planning before and during the Adventure is vital.

We'll be camping between cities and eat basic food. We will also make use of Couchsurfing and Warmshowers for accommodation in major cities.

Through all our travels so far we've learned one great thing... people generosity! People are always keen to help out if you share your culture and life experiences.

Take a leap of faith and just go and travel!! Things always tend to work out better and differently as planned prior your departure.

4. Which ‘bucket list' destinations will you be visiting and which are you looking forward to most?

De Bruyn - I have a HUGE bucket list and there are many things that will be marked off on this adventure, but if I need to choose two... Reaching the South Pole in Antarctica and cycling through Africa.

Ulrich - I personally don't have any specific destinations on my bucket list but visiting 50 countries is at the top of my list. I'm looking forward seeing and visiting the Middle East Countries and Russia.

5. You'll be riding for a charity... can you tell us more about it? And also how you're your journey benefit the charity?

No Food for Lazy Man is a charity organization set up by Solo Adventurer, Riaan Manser, to provide disadvantaged children with a sporting chance at a brighter future.

Around 7 Continents want to raise money for No Food For Lazy Man as we cycle through all the continents. We are still looking for companies or individuals that want to help by donating R2 per kilometer cycled through continents.

6. Will you have a support team or going it alone?

We will do this Adventure unaided. So we wont have a support team.

7. Have either of you done something like this before?

Around 7 Continents is our first big Adventure

8. What one item will you take along to have a little piece of home with you as you travel?

Ulrich (left) and De Bruyn (right) gearing up for their adventure.

Ulrich - A South African flag. Technology makes looking at pictures very easy and to keep contact with the people at home easy.

De Bruyn - My iPad! Will be able to look at pictures from home, keep contact, keep up-to-date with news and be able to read lots of books as we go.

9. Do you have any sponsors to help and support you on the journey?

The Sponsors we have at the moment are the following:

• SERVSOL Software Solutions - Sponsored our entire 4th year expenses
• Adventure Inc. - Helping with Camping Equipment
• Buff - Buff Headwear for the adventure
• Cape Union Mart - Winter Clothing
• Two Anonymous Cash Sponsors

We are still looking for more companies and individuals that want to help with sponsorships or donations for our 5 year epic adventure.

10. Where can people follow the journey?

People can follow our journey on Facebook and they can also check out the Around 7 Continents website for regular updates.
