Pics: 12 Weird World Records

The 2013 version of the iconic Guinness World Records book has recently been launched - Here is a round-up of some of the world's weirdest records.

Cape Town - Remember that guy who travelled around the world - all 201 countries - without ever boarding one flight and taking selfies along the way?

Well, after waiting a full 14 months, Guinness World Records has finally verified 33-year-old Graham Hughes' attempts and presented him with the World Record for being the first person in the world to visit every country without flying.

Hughes, who is originally from Liverpool in the UK, posted a video on YouTube showing off his certificate and honouring the friends and family who supported him along the way.

He stated in the blurb that Guinness World Records had carefully examined the 1 000 000 GPS data points, 10 000 photos, 400 hours of video and 192 passport pages he collected along the way before accrediting his achievement and presenting his certificate.

What made Hughes' journey even more unique is the fact that he took a 1 second video selfie in every single country he visited, stitched them together and made a (surprisingly) entertaining clip.

He started his amazing adventure in Uruguay in 2009 and finished off by crossing the border into South Sudan, the world's youngest sovereign state, in 2013.

Hughes based his journey on four key rules: he could not fly, must not drive his own transport, must take scheduled ground transport and to qualify as a visit to a country he had to step foot on dry land.

Daily Mail reports that he said it was easier to get into North Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan than it was to reach remote islands such as Nauru in the South Pacific, the Maldives and the Seychelles.

He relied mostly on cargo ships to transport him across the oceans and seas, but struck it lucky once when a cruise ship allowed him on board.

Check out his super cool selfie video below (and see if you can spot South Africa)

And then check out this clip of him with his framed and flashy Guinness World Record certificate.
