Russia rocked by meteor explosion

Reports from the Russian region of the Ural Mountains suggest that a meteor may have exploded 10,000 meters above the ground this morning.WATCH

The Russian city of Chelyabinsk have announced that they hope to attract tourists to the area after they received a special gift from space.

Wanderlust reports that officials from the city located in southern Russia plan to make the most of an unfortunate situation by using the meteor that exploded about 51kilometres above the city last month as a quirky new drawcard. The unforeseen incident saw falling debris injure around 1 000 people and a large hole has been left in the usually ice-covered lake.

Government officials and the town mayor have been brainstorming ideas to make the town more attractive to visitors. These have included a ‘Meteor Disneyland' and, perhaps more sensibly, a dive centre by the lake for visitors to search for pieces of the meteor.

"Space sent us a gift and we need to make use of it," Natalia Gritsay, a regional tourism official, told Bloomberg. "We need our own Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty."

The city's museum has jumped on the bandwagon and installed a Meteor Day exhibit, including newspaper cuttings from the day the meteor hit.

The 10,000-ton meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere last month, creating a sonic boom and bright light flares seen for kilometers around.
