Gap year: Smartphones over sleeping bags

2012-08-24 12:02

Breaking contact with the world in an effort to really find yourself seems to be a thing of the past, as recent survey by Post Office Travel Insurance shows that smartphones are most gap year travellers' must-have item.

Of the 2009 16- to 34-year-olds interviewed by the company, a whopping 52% said they wouldn't leave their smartphone behind while travelling.

Breaking Travel News reports that laptops, mobile phones, hair straighteners and Kindles are now considered essential travelling companions. The traditional sleeping bag has fallen out of favour in the list of backpack must haves, with guitars and teddy bears more likely to be taken on the trip of a lifetime.

The survey revealed that the following are considered the top five must haves in the Gap Year travellers backpack:

Smartphone - 52%
Laptop/iPad - 7%
A debit/credit card and money - 7%
iPod - 6%
Digital camera - 3%

Despite the high cost of most of these items, 29% of this age group didn't consider travel insurance to be essential while travelling abroad.
