Havana — Cuban authorities are announcing a $10.2m (R99m at R9,71/dollar) project to renovate the capital's congested international terminal.

State-run newspaper The Havana Reporter says the Terminal 3 upgrade includes eight footbridges for boarding and the expansion of a parking area outside the terminal.

Government-run website Cubadebate says that at peak moments, as many as 1 800 to 2 000 travelers can be passing through the terminal, which was designed to accommodate just 1 400.

Terminal 3 is the most modern of Jose Marti International Airport's terminals. It was built in 1998 and handles international traffic with the exception of charter flights to and from the United States, which go through Terminal 2.
