Port Louis - Mauritius is preparing for further floods after at least 11 people were killed in the island's capital of Port Louis.

Travelmole reports, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared April 1 a day of mourning after flash floods saw people being washed along the roads by floodwaters and cars overturned.

More heavy rain is expected and those who find themselves close to riverbanks or water courses should exercise extreme caution, authorities warned.

The weekend's torrential downpour hit Port Louis with some 152mm of rain falling in less than two hours on Saturday, the meteorological office reported.

Officials blamed climate change for the disaster that has left hundreds homeless in Port Louis.
