Passengers paid to leave overweight flight

Passengers on board an easyJet flight claim to have organized an impromptu money collection to convince fellow passengers to leave an overweight flight.

The Telegraph reports that a flight from Liverpool's John Lennon airport to Geneva was delayed for an hour-and-a-half last Thursday, because it was 300kg overweight. The airline cited an "exceptionally high proportion of male passengers," as the reason.

According to passengers on board the flight, staff offered £100 compensation to anyone willing to depart the plane, but struggled to find any takers. This is when a group of passengers decided to pass a collection tin around the cabin until they'd doubled the staff's offer, and managed to persuade four people to disembark.

Other passengers then carried out a second collection to reimburse those who had provided the extra £400.

A spokesperson for easyJet said that it was not its policy to allow passengers to provide compensation and said "as far as we can establish no other arrangements between passengers were made."
