Pilot collapses mid-flight, passengers to the rescue

Denver - Two nurses who happened to be aboard a United Airlines flight saved the day when they rushed to the rescue of the pilot who suffered from a mid-flight heart attack.

Huffington Post reports that the emergency situation took place thirty minutes into a flight from Des Moines, Iowa to Denver at the end of December.

It all started with an intercom announcement requesting medical expertise. The two nurses, Linda Alweiss and Amy Sorensen, answered the call and were surprised when they got directed to the cockpit.

Their surprise turned to shock when they found the pilot slumped over and mumbling with an irregular heartbeat.  According to Alweiss, he was clearly suffering from a possibly fatal arrhythmia.

Passengers helped pull the captain to the galley, where the two women set to work reviving him with a defibrillator and an IV.

A co-pilot made a safe emergency landing in Omaha where the pilot was rushed to hospital and passengers were accommodated by the airline overnight.

Thanks to the nurses’ quick response the pilot survived his ordeal.
