Road trip through Africa

2013-02-06 09:34

Southern Africa has a lot to offer when it comes to culture and nature. The best way to explore this beautiful part of Africa is by a 4x4 road trip through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. WATCH

Get your kicks on Route 66 with Trafalgar on the Main Street of America or the Mother Road as it is fondly known. Cross through eight states and three time zones while taking in the sights and sounds of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Filled with legend and the relics of a by-gone era, part of what was Route 66 cannot be travelled in totality owing to degradation of the roads and the fact that the Interstate bypasses many of the cities and towns.

Only 86% of the original transcontinental Route 66 is still drivable, with the longest continuous stretch being in Arizona.

Start at the lakefront city of Chicago with an exploration of the history and cultural impact of America’s Mother Road at the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame and Museum before moving on to Springfield, the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln.

Now you go to St Louis, Joplin to Missouri… And Oklahoma City is oh so pretty.

Start your journey in America’s Midwest with a view from atop the famed St Louis Gateway Arch. Visit the Anheuiser-Busch Brewery for a taste of the local speciality. Budweiser, an American-style lager, was introduced in 1876 when company founder Adolphus Busch set out to create the United States’ first truly national beer. Enjoy a barbecue in typical mid-west style and make your very own barbecue sauce! Ribs hot off the grill washed down with a ‘Bud.

From St Louis cross the mighty Mississippi River and visit the underground Meramec Caverns, rumored to be a former hideout of that non-law abiding citizen Jesse James. Then it’s onward to the Ozarks and the lively musical mecca of Branson.

Roll on through historic Joplin, Missouri into eastern Oklahoma, stopping at the Will Rogers Museum. Get a taste of the Old West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum with its collection of Native American art and display of antique firearms.

In Clinton you get to explore the classic collection of Route 66 history memorabilia and culture before crossing into Texas and stopping in Amarillo, the yellow rose of Texas.  At the Cadillac Ranch view the pop art installation of ten classic Cadillac’s buried nose first in the dirt. Take a tour through the Route 66 boomtown of Albuquerque, Flagstaff and the Cameron Trading Post before heading to the Grand Canyon National Park.

In Peach Springs you’ll have a déjà vu moment. Where could you have seen this place before? Then it hits you. This town was the inspiration for the hit Pixar movie – Cars. And you know it as Radiator Springs!

Driving the Mother Road in these desert oasis cities is like time-travelling. See well-preserved motels, diners and gas stations of a simpler era. But then it is full steam ahead to the lights, glitz and glamour of Las Vegas.

Travel from Sin City to the City of Angels with a side trip to the town of Barstow. Then take in Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica on the Pacific Ocean. And that is the end of your historic Route 66 journey.

Priced from R24 995 per person sharing enjoy a Trafalgar guided holiday of 14-days - a legendary trip across America. This includes first class hotel accommodation with breakfast daily, six evening meals including a wonderful Be My Guest dinner with drinks in St Louis, travel by luxury air-conditioned coach, all hotel service charges and tips, baggage handling fees and local taxes, airport transfers and more.
