Cape Town - Access to Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE, Punjab province) and the capital Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport (ISB) have been restricted until further notice.

According to an advisory issued by gov.UK, there is a high threat from terrorism and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader, Tahirul Qadri landed at Lahore airport from Canada as his flight was originally scheduled to land at Islamabad airport. It was diverted due to the large crowds who had gathered for his arrival, causing clashes between the security forces and Qadri's supporters at Islamabad airport.

Mobile phone access has reportedly been restricted in the vicinity of both airport and access to both facilities has now been blocked due to ongoing protests.

Travellers are being advised to:

- Avoid travel to both Lahore and Islamabad International airports. Expect heightened security and increased checkpoints in both cities and where possible avoid the protest areas.

- Travellers presently at Lahore and Islamabad airports should stand fast at the airport and not attempt to leave the facility. They should instead try to access to a land line or mobile coverage to maintain communication with those in your home country.

- Travellers due to fly to and from both cities are advised to confirm the status of their flights and prepared for possible delays, adjusting itineraries where necessary.
