Boston – More than a month has passed since Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared without a trace, with authorities narrowing the mystery down to the plane being hijacked, running out of fuel and crashing into the southern Indian Ocean.

Search efforts have been refined to a remote patch in the Southern Indian Ocean over the past week, after ‘pings’ coming from a man-made device were picked up by search crews.

The Telegraph reports that on Thursday a fifth signal added to hopes that searchers will soon pinpoint the object’s location and send down the Bluefin-21 submarine to confirm if it is the black box from the missing aircraft.

The Bluefin 21 sub moves slowly, and would take six weeks to two months to canvass the current underwater search zone.

International Business Times reports that the search - undertaken by 13 ships and 14 planes - focuses on area spanning 57 923 square kilometres, located about 2 280 kilometres northwest of Perth.

They still have about 12 days left to isolate the signals it receives. The battery life of the locator beacons attached to the flight data and cockpit voice recorders is expected to last up to 45 days.
