Culture, cuisine and shopping are some of the reasons the UK is such a popular year-end holiday destination and now British Airways has added another, reducing fares to London from 10 African cities during December.

Last year over 2.6 million people booked to fly with British Airways to London over the festive break and by offering discounts of up to 40% the airline hopes to encourage even more to explore the attractions of one of the world’s great cities this year.

The city is home to over 240 museums ranging from the obscure Fan Museum to the renowned British Museum - entry to many of which is free.

During winter the Natural History Museum offers much more than an insight into our planet and environment. It is also home to one of the best ice skating rinks in the capital.

Besides museums, there are art galleries catering to almost every interest including the famous National Gallery and the Tate Modern. Private galleries and collections also abound.

London has earned a reputation as one of the world’s food capitals and again the options are diverse ranging from street food to a traditional afternoon tea at the Langham London in Regent Street.

There’s even scope to do your own thing and have a winter picnic. There are plenty of places to stock a hamper, but Fortum & Mason’s Piccadilly store, with its lower-ground floor food hall, is probably one of the most indulgent. As far a picnic locations go, Primrose Hill is arguably one of the best, providing views across the London skyline.

As well as art, culture and cuisine there’s plenty to choose from on the shopping front, whether it’s the hi-tech gadgetry at the i-Store in Covent Garden or indulging your inner child at Hamleys, probably the world’s most famous toy store.

If you’re still not sure what to see and do, feel free to ask a member of the British Airways’ cabin crew who are always happy to share their thoughts on the best places to visit in London.

British Airways’ year-end specials to London offer discounts across all cabins, offers are available immediately and run until 7 October - visit to find out more
