Young travellers spending more

2013-09-26 08:58

Johannesburg - Spending by youth travellers has increased by 40% since 2007, compared to an increase of 3% by other international travellers over the same period.

Tourism Update reports that this is what New Horizons III, a research report on youth and student travel compiled by the World Youth Student and Educational (WYSE) Travel Confederation, revealed recently.

According to the report, £138bn (R2.18 trillion) of the £692bn (R10.95 trillion) spent on world tourism last year came from young travellers.

David Chapman, WYSE Travel Confederation Director General, said young travellers want to enrich themselves with cultural experiences, meet local people and improve their employability when they return home.

He added that this has aided in broadening the travel industry.

The report is based on a survey of 34 000 young travellers from 137 countries.
