Lions to return to Malawi

2012-05-28 12:09

For the first time in more than 20 years, Malawi will be home to the Big 5 once more as a delivery of four South African lions is expected at the Majete Wildlife Reserve in August.

Wanderlust reports that the reserve is currently home to elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards but the introduction of the lions will complete the 'big five' and restore the reserve to a naturally functioning ecosystem. Lions were once common in the area but, following prolonged poaching, scouts reported sightings only once every 100 days in the 1960s until the species disappeared entirely in the 1980s.

The local lions will be transferred with the help of funding from Robin Pope Safaris. Since 2003, park management has been resurrecting and installing sufficient infrastructure to ensure complete safety for both the lions and surrounding communities. Along with an abundance of prey, this means the park is a prime environment for the big cats.
