Airport security has double standards, says reader

2014-02-10 13:40
News24 Travel reader, Stefan Maree, contacted us to share his story in response response to the piece detailing alleged baggage tampering captured at on camera at Cape Town International Airport.

Stefan Maree wrote: My baggage was tampered with on a flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

The bag was ripped open but luckily I did not pack any valuables in my bag, but carried it with me.

When I brought it under the attention of Mango, their staff just called it “pilferage from baggage” !!! I was furious! My view is that this is mainly a breach of security and has dire consequences.

The person/persons that had access to my baggage could steal from me AND put a bomb or even drugs into my baggage if it is so easy to open my bag and take stuff out without being seen!

It is unacceptable and can be controlled as only a few people have access to bags and should be treated as a huge security risk.

When I go through the gates I am searched and my baggage is being searched for even small stuff. If you only mention the word bomb, you are arrested and it is a huge drama…. Though… people have access to bags and nobody cares? How is that for security?
