Most passengers who have experienced a plane suddenly dropping like a stone during a severe bout of turbulence seem to have the experience engraved into their memory...

Take a look at this round-up of experiences emailed into News24 Travel.

Johan van Rooyen: We flew from Houston, Texas to Orlando, Florida in 1990.

This was in the middle of the night because any number of flights had been delayed. There was a severe weather system over the southern part of the USA. We had to get to our holiday destination which was Disney, so we were only too happy to get a flight.

The captain warned us to stay seated and buckled in.

The plane was being thrown around like a leaf. It was as bad as you can imagine and with all the lights inside the plane switched off, it was terrifying.

Landed safely with nobody hurt. We arrived at our hotel at 3 o'clock in the morning.

Kenneth Mavela: Mango flight from PE to JHB. As we left PE turbulence started and there was this lady next to me that was so upset as she was not a frequent flier. The other guys were drinking making a joke out it and having fun as if nothing was happening.

Fortunately that was not for long as we landed safely in JHB. Not a good experience I tell u"

Ronnie Earl:

Traveling from Hong Kong 1, 5 years ago we experience sever turbulence over Mauritius. So bad that I fell out of my seat as the plane shook violently.

10 minutes later the pilot came on the over heard asking for a doctor as unbeknown to us a gentleman passenger had broken his ankle clean. He had lifted clean in the air while walking tie the galley.

We were 4 hours outside jhb and then had to divert back to Sri Lanka, Colombo where he was treated and we had to stay for 22 hours in a hotel about 3 hours drive from airport.

The passengers insurance would not cover him for sub Saharan territories so we had to divert at great cost and time about 200 passengers to Sri Lanka .

Not to mention the 200 people or so in jhb that had to wait 24 hours.

The plane was on its second flight only."

Phillip Payn: A few years ago our Airbus experienced wind sheer over Mozambique and the plane dropped like a stone. All the food myself and some others passengers were stuck against the roof for a couple of seconds then all came down hard. What a mess, food everywhere, similar hole in roof from a head and some injuries.

Wife and I were also shit scared of flying after that, but it does fade. BUT never again have I flown un buckled! Except for a quick duck to the toilet.
