Innocent passengers from overseas can be easily duped

News24 Travel reader Terry Walker agrees with Newly Appointed Minister Derek Hanekom, that more needs to be done to make tourists feel safe and welcome

"On the news channel I noted that the Minister of Tourism wants to make South African airports friendlier, hopefully something will be done about the crooks that prowl OR Tambo looking for gullible travellers.
My husband and I (both in our mid seventies and residing in Botswana) were at the International airport en route to Heathrow when an overly friendly man approached us grabbed our trolley and said let me help you.  We were not sure where the Virgin Airlines desk so we allowed him to lead the way on a circuitous route which came to a dead end, he then grabbed my handbag, when I protested he said it was his job and promptly sped away towards a lift, fortunately my husband was able to keep up with him also there was a wait for the lift to I was able to catch up with them.  In the lift we noticed he had opened the zip on my handbag and was pulling my purse from the bag.  I protested and took my bag and purse from him.  The lift stopped he then walked away.
We had been warned about crime at OR Tambo Airport but there are innocent passengers from overseas who could easily be duped by the crooks prowling around both outside and inside the airport."
