Jellyfish pounces and buffalo charges - readers share their stories

2014-01-31 10:49
It seems like January 2014 has been filled with a range of weird, wonderful and terrifying close encounters between humans and animals.

First there was the story of the angry elephant in the Kruger National Park, which charged a vehicle, flipped it over and pushed it several 100 metres into the bush, severely injuring a British tourist inside and causing major shock for her South African partner.

The incident was considered so serious that SANParks decided to euthanise the bull, which was in musth and had been causing trouble around the park prior to the attack. The killing of the elephant led to huge public outcry and a swirl of drama followed, as incriminating video footage of the incident emerged.

Shortly after this, Kruger Sightings posted a video of an irate lion mock charging and growling at two children leaning out of a car window to get a closer shot of the big cat. SANParks Acting Head of Communications responded to the footage, pleading with guests to respect the animals.

“Unfortunately if the lion had mauled the children we would have been faced with same situation of having to put the animal down. Once these wild animals have human contact and taste human blood we have to put them down,” he said.

Finally, within the past week, two unsuspecting humans stumbled upon creatures where they were least expecting them.

There was the lioness in the loo at Kgalagadi's Kamqua picnic spot that gave Sandy Borcherds from Somerset West the fright of her life and the croc at the Rust de Winter dam that got away with angler, Bazil Roth's sleeping bag, but fortunately not his foot.

So, in the light of all this, we asked readers to share their own close encounters of the animal kind with us. Here are a few of the responses:

Colleen Linda Keyes - Yes .... at Kruger Park ... A hyena got through the fence and was running from tent to tent and house to house early in the mng. It ran around our bungalow and almost into my husband and kids who were standing just outside the veranda. It literally skidded to a stop in utter terror and fear inches from them. It took off in the other direction ...and eventually found its way out again. A huge worry as toddlers were playing on the swings....

Gary Cronje - Had a White Rhino and her Calf sniff at our Fire and 3 White Rhino Bulls chased me while mountain biking through Lichtenburg Animal Sanctuary - Sorry PTA Zoo closed it down:(
