Cape Town - Video footage of a baggage handler allegedly tampering with bags at Cape Town International Airport is doing the rounds on social media and causing quite a stir.

News24Travel published the video and asked readers whether they had ever had their bags tampered with and, if so, what the outcome of the experience was.

We have received a flood of responses to the question, suggesting that baggage tampering may be a bigger problem than many realise. Electronics, perfume and sports equipment seem to be items that disappear out of luggage most often.

Cape Town International has responded to the uproar on social media, stating that the incident is under investigation.

Here are some of the emails, Tweets and Facebook comments shared with us:

Madeleine Sahling - I’ve had numerous items stolen from my bag on a trip from Jhb to Kby – SAA did not care they did not want to pay out my claim and didn’t even want to look at the camera’s on the premises.

D Ludick - Don't remember the airline, maybe it was Nationwide.  Perfume disappeared out of my bag.  They did a camera scan but admit that there were areas the security cameras didn't cover.  No compensation from them.  I had to claim from my insurance.

tjeevan - I was travelling to durban to play golf my golf bag was plastic wraped at home when I got to durban the plastic wrap was torn open and my driver missing shame on SAA

Charles Sambo - I travelled on Mango from Johannesburg to George on the 2nd of Feb on the 14:45 flight. Upon arrival the lock on my bag had been taken off and my bag opened. I reported to Mango they took my details and that was the last time I heard from them.

Tracey Roux - We travel between Lagos and SA (PE) every 3 months and my husband has had cd’s and a cell phone stolen.  Yes I know the cell phone shouldn’t have  been in the case but he had forgotten his SA phone inside there but it was padlocked and cable tied.....didnt stop them.  I have had perfume stolen out my case too.  Its ongoing......  Now I travel with those cheap PEP store bags.....those huge shoppers that the Transkei people use on the taxis and trains......and I don’t even wrap them and cannot lock them......they obviously are not interested in those bags.....its the cases that are locked because then they think there is something in there for them!!!

Kathleen Jardim - My daughter flew from Jhb to Dubai on the evening of 6 Feb. She arrived in Dubai to find that her lock had been broken and upon closer inspection saw that a small Pandora box that held her bracelet charms had been opened and the charms removed. Seems nothing else was taken.  Shocking. When are they going to do something about it. This has been going on for years.

zimkitamkosana - Yes l have had my my new versace perfume stolen at OR Tambo in December. I get very angry when l think about. The stupid fool who stole  it is cursed.

Andisa Macanda -  A bottle of perfume was stolen out of my luggage. Was travelling between EL an JHB. Reported this to SAA and was paid a bit more that a R100 for a bottle that I had purchased for R1 250.

kgantsimac mac - I am not suprised at the video, especially coming from cape town. In october i had my luggage tempared with.

Jennifer Abrahams - My daughter was intimidated by cabin crew to have her hand luggage stowed in the hold when there was "insufficient space" on her flight from joburg to cape town two yrs ago, of course to find that her laptop was stolen from her bag when disembarking. SAA of course would take no responsibility after much correspondence to and fro.

Leilani Kermis - it will never change. even wrapping your bag in plastic makes no difference

Yasmina Jones Sawant - This unfortunately is common and happened to me from Jhb to London, stole all the branded items and had the nerve to add other random things and dirt in my suitcase, which means they were probably stealing from a few bags @ the same time. Reported it and ofcourse nothing came from it. This is a major security threat at our Intl airports as they can put anything into suitcases too. Since then I changed to hardshell suitcase as someone showed me how easily it is to open a padlocked zip suitcase.

Kaylene Cox - If any thing is missing he must pay for the goods taken from his wages and be fired.

Cheldon Botes - Should cut all his fingers off.

Meagan Von Willingh - We got a trace on a cellphone back to or thambo and saa said there's nothing they could do.... Useless!!!

Charlie Monson - are these guy's still working for the baggage co, or at least on suspension pending investigation.....only in SA
