The only thing better than embarking on a new adventure, is being able to look back at the photos and recall that you went there.

We have come a long way since capturing moments with wind-up cameras and waiting weeks for camera spools to develop.

Nowadays, photos are taken with instantaneous viewing ability, having numerous editing options, and sharing portals.

Today’s travel talk discussion showed that many travellers have traded in their hi-tech camera equipment for light-weight smart phones. Applications can be downloaded to smart phones, allowing you to take good quality photos, edit them, and share them within minutes.

Photo-sharing network, Instagram was highlighted as the best and most popular app used among travellers, because it is quick, convenient, and offers many editing options.

Many travellers opted for storing their images on online back-up portal, Drop box, rather than hard drives and data sticks, which is a clear indication of how quickly online platforms are becoming useful to travellers.

Camera protection

There was also a discussion of what the best options are to avoid risk to your expensive gear, and most responses were to avoid exposing your camera to weather conditions such as rain, snow, wind and heat.

It’s really up to you to look after your equipment, whether it is expensive or not. A common thread that surfaced throughout the discussion was that you don't actually need expensive equipment to take good photos, although it helps. Your ability to take a good photo is strongly dependent on positioning and lighting – so keep that in mind the next time you’re out snapping photos.

If you're a keen traveller who likes to share tales, tips and trifles with other wanderers, you should head on over to Twitter every Tuesday for Travel Talk on Twitter, also known as #TTOT.

Happening every week at 11:30 (SA time), the chat is run by a few of the world's top travel bloggers, such as Travel Dudes, Roni Weiss and Runaway Juno; aimed at getting travellers from all over the world to share their experiences.

How it works: A new topic is introduced every week, so stay in the loop by keeping tabs on the TTOT Facebook group.

The discussion is formed of five different questions relative to the topic. Each question is numbered; Q1 - Q5, with a couple of minutes for responses to each. In order to respond to a specific question, begin your answer with A1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, of course including #TTOT so you're included in the stream.

Check out the Travel Talk on Twitter Facebook page for updates about upcoming chats:

Q1: When I travel, I take photos with my .... because...
Q2: How to best protect your photo camera against the elements while travelling?

Q3: How can you avoid risking expensive gear, but still take amazing photos while travelling?

Q4: Best photo apps you use?

Q5: What are your recipes/shortcuts for uploading or storing photos on a trip?
