Pick a seatmate before you fly

2012-04-30 10:48

While we would all love to have a dreamboat as a seatmate on every flight, lady luck seldom smiles on us in this regard and we mostly end up next to rather average to somewhat pungent companions.

However, this is about to change, as airlines have started using Facebook and LinkedIn to let passengers pick their seatmates prior to the flight.

KLM's Meet & Seat and Malaysia Airlines' MHbuddy ‘social-seating' programmes let passengers see who will be on the same plane or who else is flying to San Francisco to attend the same business meeting, TravelMole reports.

KLM's Meet & Seat is available of flights between Amsterdam and New York, Sao Paulo and San Francisco, and is voluntary.

Once you've booked your flight, you have between 90 days and 48 hours before departure to access ‘Manage my bookings' on the website, where they can choose Meet & Seat if they wish to share their Facebook and/or LinkedIn profile with other passengers. They can edit their profile and choose which information they want to share.

Malaysia Airlines' MHbuddy is a Facebook application which works with check-in technology. "As they check in on Facebook, they can view the photos and seat selections of any of their Facebook friends on the flight and can choose seats next to them, if available," TravelMole explains.

This new way of harnessing the power of social media has been welcomed by many, but it has also raised quite a lot of concern regarding privacy.

KLM's Facebook page has attracted comment from some concerned customers.

"Very weird," writes Nora Barry Byrne. "I totally vote on the creepy. Is the default to opt in or opt out? If I was traveling with my kids/teens or traveling on my own - all I think of is the creeps that would use this to stalk."
