Photos: SA travel APP makes top 10 list

The world’s biggest travel app distributor has rated the visual beauty of an app featuring South Africa, as one of its best.

South Africa Travel: The Rainbow Nation, a smartphone app released in April has been rated one of its top 10 by Sutro Media, the world’s biggest travel app distributor.
Kim Grant, a co-founder of Sutro Media, which operates from San Francisco in the United States, said, “in terms of quality and ratings it is one of our top 10.” The app is still only available on ITunes and will be available for androids by May 15.
Sutro Media, which has more than 600 writers, and thousands of apps ranging from those on Cuba to Las Vegas (it’s biggest selling app), said the app, which has been endorsed by Brand South Africa, had rapidly sold a few thousand copies and was receiving four-star and five-star ratings.
“It is one of our most visually beautiful apps,” Grant said.
Although IPhones have only been on the market since 2007 and Androids since 2008, smartphone applications have grown rapidly with an estimated 500,000 apps and some 10 billion downloads by October 2011, according to Apple.  CNN in a review of smartphones this month noted: “no matter which smartphone you have, it's the apps, not the features, that make your phone unique.”
South Africa Travel: The Rainbow Nation is a complete tourist and business guide to South Africa. Written by South African-born journalist, Charlene Smith it is independent and the most wide-ranging app yet developed on South Africa.  There have been apps on the country developed around the 2010 World Soccer Cup, as an example, but South Africa Travel: The Rainbow Nation is designed for families traveling with children, to the business traveler, extreme sports enthusiast, bird-lover or botanist, to the tourist who is looking for a good safari, great wines, or a places to volunteer in wildlife sanctuaries or in poor communities.
“It has been wonderful developing it,” Smith said. “It was incredibly hard work, but it allowed me to visit my home country every day from my office in Cambridge, near Boston. I was again astonished at how incredibly beautiful South Africa is, and the wide range of activities for tourists and resources for business people.
“Brand South Africa and South African Tourism were tremendously helpful in assisting with photographs, every entry takes anything from 10 to 15 photographs.  I also harvested photographs and information from my own networks, as well as South African corporations and smaller tourist agencies, to create a visually stunning travel app.”
The nature of apps is such that they continually evolve and are responsive to consumer comments. South Africa Travel: The Rainbow Nation is already being upgraded. It should have 1,000 entries within a year.  Already there are around 3,000 pics, some 250 videos, and around 15,000 links.  Smith said, “It can be designed to focus attention on an issue, for example, there will be a world pediatric cardiology conference in South Africa last year, so I am adding information that may be of interest to visiting cardiologists.”
South Africa Travel: The Rainbow Nation has multiple entries, including more than 50 towns, villages and cities, as well as game reserves from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to Kruger and Addo Elephant Park. There are extensive entries on wine tourism, paleoanthropology, sport, arts and culture, and history. It has travel info for everyone from backpackers to the five-star tourist.
For the traveler who wants info on the Comrades marathon, the Argus, JSE, BRICS, or elephants - the app has it.  There is also botanical info, gay-friendly places and the best beaches, hotels and restaurants.
Smith said that, “as time goes by I will cull any organization, that receives bad reviews from the public.”

Win one of three free version of the App by posting you favourite pic of South Africa on our GoTravel24 Facebook page and mailing it to - the winners will be notified on Monday 21 May 2012.
