7 REALLY authentic things to do in Jozi!

2014-06-24 09:16
We have said this before and we will say it again: Johannesburg is a thriving city with so much more to offer than its “City of Gold” status. It is saying goodbye to its reputation as the crime-ridden, grimy city of South Africa.

Jozi is now the city where all things urban, cool and hip are happening, and we thought we should share some cool things that you can do in Jozi that you couldn’t do a few years ago (they also happen to be nice on the pocket).

1.    Soweto & Alexandra bicycle tours

We all know that Soweto and Alexandra are rich with history and heritage, and also offer great sightseeing opportunities. But did you know there are now new and exciting ways to experience the best of what these places have to offer?

For one, you can either go quad biking or cycling through some of Soweto's coolest spots.
Check out Soweto Bicycle Tours website for details:www.sowetobicycletours.com

Also check out the Soweto Outdoor adventure website for cool activities such as quadbiking, go karting, bungee jumping and so much more: www.sowetooutdooradventures.co.za
Alexandra Tours also has some pretty cool bicycle tour packages that you can check out on their website:www.alexandratours.co.za

2.   Stand up Comedy at The Box (Maboneng Precinct)

We can't think of a better way to keep yourself warm, than by being filled in a room of laughter. No seriously, laughter warms up the soul. The Box offers a weekly installment of Stand Up comedy sessions with brilliant line-ups. Tickets are R50, and can only be bought at the door.

For more information, visit The Box official Facebook page by clicking here.

3.    Live jazz at The Orbit

Having opened earlier this year, The Orbit, a live music venue and bistro offers  the best possible creative expression platform for jazz musicians. It also guarantees you the opportunity to experience authentic jazz tunes in an intimate and cosy setting, while sipping on coffee, enjoying a selection of tapas, or delicious pasta dishes.

For more info, visit the The Orbit website by clicking here.

4.    View contemporary African Art at Afronova gallery

Situated in Parkhurst, this gallery offers the very best in contemporary African Art. What’s great about Afronova is that the gallery also has a specialized bookshop with a catalogue of local and international publications on the art of the continent. It also hosts performances and screenings on the historic square and happenings with a unique Pan African flavour.

Note: The gallery is open to the public but only via appointment. For more information and bookings, visit the Afronova website by clicking here.

5.    Chill at The Living Room

We all know one of the most beautiful things about Johannesburg is that majestic skyline, and trust us, The Living Room is one of the best places to marvel at the Jozi skyscrapers. Not only does Living Room offer great views, but it, in itself, is visually appealing. Set as an “urban eco showroom for green design and lifestyle”, this place is perfect for sundowners and refreshing brunch.
Bonus: To avoid the winter chill, the Living Room is decked out with gas heaters to make sure that you are warm at all times.

For more information, visit the Living Room Jozi website by clicking here.

6.    Experience China Town in Jozi

Avid shopper? Why not try a different experience by checking out what China Town in the heart of Joburg will offer you. There's "Old Chinatown", which is situated in the City Centre, and then there's the "New Chinatown" situated in Cyrildene. (Johannesburg is among the few cities in the world to have TWO Chinatowns).

If you're looking for bargains, you can head over to Old Chinatown in the crown mines.
If you're looking for an authentic thai spa experience, head on over to the Bangkok Thai Spa on Cnr Derrick Ave and Hettie Street in Cyrildene.

7.    Try some Motherland Coffee in Rosebank

Motherland not only makes great coffee (for the coffee lovers) but also provides free wifi for two hours per customer, comfy couches to relax in and catch up on current affairs and a bar for laptops.
You can also sip on your coffee knowing that it was made with a good cause in mind because all products are sourced from various African regions under direct Fair Trade principle! Who said drinking coffee wasn't a good thing?
