It's so easy to always look to overseas trips as the big great adventures, but in South Africa we are super lucky to have gazillions of awesome options on our doorsteps to consider.

We've put together a quick list for you of some of the ones we rate pretty highly:

Crocodile Cage Diving in Oudtshoorn
Basically the same as shark cage diving, just with 4m Nile crocs. A croc can apply with their jaw 1 ton of pressure to their victim per square inch. Just thought you'd like to know. Ouch. Eina. No thanks.

2. White Water Rafting on Zambezi
If you've got time to travel a little further afield, then this is certainly an adrenaline quencher. Spending a day cruising the white waters of the Zambezi is a pretty awesome way to spend the day. And if the actual rafting down Grade 5 rapids is not enough of a kick for you, lose the raft, and gain a boogie board. And hold tight. You're in for a ride.

3. Tubing on Storms River
They closed up shop for a while, but we're happy that they're back in the mix adding to the great adventures on our doorstep. Not only do you tube down a river, but also do some scenic trekking and cliff jumping. An adventure in a day.

4. Pony Trekking in Lesotho
Pony-trekking is a great way to get off the beaten track and take in the breathtaking landscapes that make up Lesotho. Whether you're a skilled horseman, or never sat on a pony before, there's a place on these treks for you. You can choose between a one-hour ride, or a more exploratory trip of 6 days. It's up to you.

5. Hot Air ballooning in Mpumalanga
You don't need to travel all the way to Sossousvlei to take in the beauty of the land at sunrise by hot air balloon. You just need to find your way to the Mpumalanga Lowveld to fly over the magnificence of the Northern Drakensberg escarpment and the Kruger National Park. Check out what's on offer with Balloons over Africa.

6. Snowboarding in Lesotho
Check out Afriski, a Ski and Mountain Estate located in Losotho and your next best bet to a snowcapped festive season since Tiffindell closed shop in the Drakensberg. Expect a wide variety of activities ranging from skiing to trout fishing.

7. Hoerikwaggo Trail - the mountain in the sea
Take 5 days and four nights to walk the 75km that join Table Mountain and Cape Point winding your way above the beloved Mother City. Views abounding, great accommodation available, this is a world class hike. For those with less time, you can also just book two consecutive nights. It's worth it.
