Cape Town in Winter

2013-05-09 08:16
With the winter chill rolling in many Capetonians love to hibernate and stay indoors, having no idea what to do in the wet and windy weather. Believe it or not, there are many things to do in Cape Town during winter. Instead of holing up, why not try these 10 things to keep you busy this winter?
Go shopping
A good way to stay warm and dry this winter:  Shop till you drop. The Cape Quarter in De Waterkant have upmarket and on-trend designer stores. Errol Arendz, well-known South African designer, has his DuSud flagship store in the Cape Quarter. The perfect place to find affordable luxury designer wear for both the winter and summer seasons! Better yet, the Cape Quarter has great restaurants with good food, coffee and wine so after your shopping session you can have a spot of lunch.
Work up a sweat
Many people choose not to exercise during winter as it is way to freezing to even think of braving the gym. Why not try Hot Yoga? You do either Bikrim or Vinyasa Yoga in a 40 degree Celsius room so you really work up a sweat – and stay extra warm while working out. Places like Yoga Zone in the CBD offer great drop in packages if you are just visiting the city or monthly packages for the locals.
Winter specials
Cape Town restaurants are known for their great winter-warmer menu specials, where you can find half priced meals or 2 and 3 course meals at a special rate. They usually throw in a glass of wine to boot. It is a great time to test out what our restaurants have to offer without breaking the bank.
Indoor markets
There are loads of indoor markets that are great for a lazy Sunday to amble around the stores and try out the local cuisine. The V&A Waterfront’s Market on the Wharf and Hout Bay’s Bay Market are always buzzing on the weekends.
Something for the kids
With kids not able to play outdoors, you need to expend their energy another way. The Cape Town Science Centre in Observatory is perfect to keep the kids entertained and fascinated for hours. If you are out shopping at the V&A Waterfront and need a quick break for the kids, Pimp Your Biscuit, where they can make their own biscuits, is a great way to keep them entertained and happy for a while.
Sunday Lunch
If you are looking for something special to do with the family or simply want to go out for the afternoon with a friend, then go for a Sunday lunch at a 5 star hotel. Places like Savour at 15 on Orange offers great Sunday lunches and it will keep you, your family and your tastebuds happy.
Cosy up in a bar
Cosy bars are perfect for that winter-warmer after work drink. Societi Bistro in Gardens has a cosy indoor setting to meet with friends and socialise – without getting wet.
The theatre
Take in some local theatre productions and go watch a play this winter. It will be the perfect opportunity to dress up and show off those new winter boots. The Baxter, Artscape and Fugard theatres all have plays that run throughout winter.
Eat out at a wine farm
Many wine farms have great cosy restaurants where you can enjoy a lazy lunch or dinner. Places like Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia always have a heart-warming crackling fire and are the perfect setting for a winter meal.
Pamper yourself
Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you should stop looking after yourself. Book into a spa for an afternoon. Suntra Spa at 15 on Orange offers great body wraps and scrubs which will keep you warm and help you detox from any winter overindulgence.
