Disappointing decline in tourists from key markets

Johannesburg - According to the latest figures from Statistics SA, arrivals from most key source markets were down in January 2013 when compared to the same period last year.

Tourism Update reports that the biggest drop came from SA's biggest source market, the UK, with a decline of 18,66% from 42 284 in 2012 to 34 392 in 2013. 

US arrivals increased slightly, while German arrivals were down from 22 451 to 21 101. 
Overall, overseas arrivals (which do not include arrivals from Africa) decreased from 210 253 in January 2012 to 202 548 in January 2013. 

The key source markets for January 2013 were:

1. UK - down 18,66%
2. US - up 2,67%
3. Germany - down 6,01%
4. China - down 3,52%
5. Brazil - up 12,55%
6. France - down 1,37%
7. Australia - down 4,62%
8. The Netherlands - down 18,38%
9. India - up 14,92%
10. Canada - up 0,36%

Transit arrivals continued to account for a large percentage of emerging market arrivals. According to the Stats SA, transits need to spend at least 24 hours in South Africa to be defined as a tourist.
