Skukuza –Two tourists of Chinese origin were injured when their vehicle was overturned by an elephant on the H1-7 tar road between Shingwedzi and Punda Maria in the Kruger National Park on Monday morning.

Beeld reports that the man and driver of the vehicle is Polish, but works in China, while the female passenger is Chinese.

The driver suffered broken ribs and internal bleeding and the woman was flung out of the car, but reported only minor injuries.

Kruger National Park spokesperson, William Mabasa said the man was rushed to Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital after being assisted by a local doctor and paramedics on the scene.

He said that it was not clear why the elephant charged the vehicle, and that by the time park staff got to the scene the animal had disappeared. As the elephant is not marked or tagged, it is impossible to track its movements.

“I think the tourists switched off their car engine, and when the elephant approached, they couldn’t quickly switch on and drive off. Apart from that, tourists must be careful with these animals as it is mating season and these bulls can be angry because they’re looking for mating partners,” said Mabasa.

He said that tourists should always make sure that there is a safe distance between themselves and wild animals, especially elephants - enough to make a quick getaway if necessary.
