Hermanus gets free bicycle taxi service

2013-04-08 16:38
Cape Town - A free bicycle taxi service will be available to visitors in Hermanus from April 8.

Tourism Update reports that the service will be conducted as a pilot project for three months, after which its success will be evaluated and a decision will be taken on making it permanent.

Initially three bicycle taxis will traverse the business district from 09h00 to 17h00 from Monday to Saturday on a hop-on, hop-off basis, with designated stop points along the route that will not only cover the main areas but also include hidden alleys and byways.

The cost of the service will be carried by businesses, which can participate in the project by taking a listing or an advertisement on a map of Hermanus, which is given free of charge to visitors.

The Bicycle Taxi project is a partnership between Overstrand Municipality, the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and the Businesses of Hermanus.

The first six taxi cyclists were drafted from the Overstrand Municipality's database of unemployed persons with an interest in the hospitality industry. Customer care training and an educational tour to familiarise the cyclists with the attractions and points of interest of Hermanus were provided and the Overstrand Traffic Department gave them instruction in traffic safety.

The route was approved by the Overstrand Municipality's Traffic Department and will exclude the three major traffic circles of the town for safety reasons. The taxis are equipped with 18 gears, battery-operated lights and indicators and special brakes to ensure safe stopping when loaded. Each bicycle can seat two guests at a time.
