Hip grandparents plunge off Signal Hill

2013-06-07 10:19

Cape Town - A Capetonian twin celebrated their 75th birthday on Thursday by taking a leap off Signal Hill.

The Cape Times reports that Diane Bloch and Rosalie Wallach decided to celebrate, not only their birthday, but life in general by paragliding off the famous Cape Town landmark, doing it in memory of Bloch's daughter, Nola, who succumbed to cancer two years ago.

According to Bloch, they also wanted to raise awareness about hospices.

"This is an affirmation of life," Bloch said on Thursday after taking the plunge. "My grandchildren tell me that we are the hippest grandparents in the world. Age is nothing but a number."

Their friends, however, were of a different opinion, apparently thinking the two women had gone quite crazy indeed.

"I want to raise awareness of life and how quickly it can be taken away," Bloch explained.

While they were planning on doing their flight on Monday, their actual birthday, the weather was too bad, extending their plans with a few days.

Paraglide SA guide, Wayne Heuer, told the paper that their oldest paraglider was 94 and their youngest four.

Now take a look at this tandem-paragliding adventure off Lion’s Head, Cape Town by Charles Thompson. Have any videos of your own to share? email us on Info@news24travel24.com
