Cape Town – If you’ve spotted a massive grey, ominous-looking ship in the harbour, don’t panic Capetonians, we are not under siege.

The huge aircraft carrier, known as the Cavour, entered the harbour on Wednesday morning, accompanied by the frigates Bergamini and Etna as part of an African humanitarian tour.

The ships are manned by the 30th Naval Group and are expected to offer humanitarian aid, engage in maritime security operations during their journey around they continent. Their first stop took place last Friday at Mombasa in Kenya. They will also be visiting Angola, the DRC, Nigeria and Morocco, among others.

SA Breaking News reports that a host of demonstrations and charitable activities are planned for the duration of the fleet’s Cape Town visit between 5 and 11 February.

The Cavour, which is the Italian Navy's newest flagship, will also be open to the public for viewings from 10:00 to 18:00 everyday up until 10 February.   It will be docked at Portside Road at Cape Town Harbour’s Eastern Mole.

Entry is free of charge; however visitors will be required to present their ID books when they board the vessels.
