Cape Town - A runway was closed at Cape Town International Airport on Wednesday afternoon after a kulula plane on route to Johannesburg apparently experienced engine problems.

Acsa airports manager, Deidre Davids, confirmed an incident had been reported at 15:00 with a flight on route to Johannesburg. ACSA's fire and rescue team was busy doing a sweep of the runway to make sure there was no debris.
Davids could not confirm the cause at this point.

Social media updates claim that an engine of a kulula plane, departing from Cape Town International, exploded just before take-off.

The following was posted on the kulula Facebook page, by Chad Tehini, "Do you comply with safety regulations? Upon departure on flight mn104 from Cape Town to jhb, an engine exploded!!! Luckily we were still on the ground! This is ridiculous!!!"

While the founder and CEO Legacy Lifestyle, Group Marketing Manager Legacy Group Mike Rowley tweeted the following (@MikeyRowley),  "Love#Kulula, our engine just caught fire and blew pieces all over the runway on takeoff. Holy shit that was close"

kulula responded by saying "@MikeyRowley Something flew into our engine, sorry you got a fright. Our team will look after you and get you on your way safely."

The airline also mentioned via its twitter stream that a spare aircraft was being sent to Cape Town to take over the flight.
