Cape Town - Today marked a very special day for the newest Wonder of Nature Table Mountain and one particular tourist who was having a pretty crap day.

It took careful monitoring of ticket purchases to determine the milestone, as the Aerial Cableway welcomed its 23rd millionth visitor.

Thamsanqa Welcome Peter from Port Elizabeth was about to purchase his ticket when he received the good news.

Accompanied by his wife and cousins, he had almost missed out on the opportunity after losing his wallet containing a wad of his spending money.
His wife Phindiwe said, "We initially wanted to skip Table Mountain and visit other historic landmarks."

But for Thamsanqa (whose name means Fortune in Xhosa), despite the wallet mishap, the day turned into a spectacular mountain visit.

He was welcomed with red carpet treatment comprising of a lovely goodie bag, balloons, four complimentary Cableway tickets, and a R250 Table Mountain cafe voucher that he and his wife could enjoy once they reached the top.

Marvelling at the beauty of his surroundings, Thamsanqa said he loves Cape Town because it is a beautiful place.

“It is exciting here, and the people are very friendly and warm,” he said. He further added that coming to Cape Town rejuvenates his health and mood.

“The air that you breathe up here connects you to the earth, I just love this place,” he said.

Marketing manager of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Collette Van Aswegen said that it took 14 months to reach this new million milestone, making it a new record for the company. While it is difficult to estimate (as it depends on the particular month as well as weather conditions), it usually takes an average of 16 months for the cableway to reach a million visitors.

It took the Aerial Cableway 28 years since its opening in October 1929 to reach its first millionth visitor. Since its 7th wonder status, the mountain has seen an influx of visitors.
