KZN Nudist beach: mayor welcomes proposal

2014-02-27 08:47
Durban - The KZN Naturists’ Association (KZNNA) was welcome to come forward and make representations for the formation of a nude beach on the South Coast, Hibiscus Coast Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said yesterday.

KZN naturists had gathered at an inaugural meeting to establish the naturist association in the province about a week ago.

Christo Bothma, spokesperson for the association, had said they would approach different municipalities for a secluded space for naturism on their beaches.

At the time, municipal spokesperson Simon Soboyisa had said they would not entertain public indecency on their beaches. “Our beaches in the municipality are for the public. We believe that the majority of the people would not approve of a beach for the nude,” he said.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Mqwebu said people with different ideas were welcome to approach the municipality. She warned that municipal by-laws will have to be taken into consideration.

Mqwebu said, “We wish to reiterate that currently our by-laws do not permit such activity on our beaches. Should the municipality desire to change this position, a formal council resolution would be required in order to amend the existing by-laws after the normal public consultative process had been exhausted. We hope this clarifies the municipality’s position on the matter”.

Municipal manager Max Mbili on Tuesday was reported as saying the necessary permission had to be obtained from the HCM for a nudist beach, and public opinion tested.

Before this official permission was granted, establishing such a beach would be a contravention of the municipal by-laws, and therefore illegal, he reportedly said.  Bothma could not be reached for comment yesterday.
