Orange River Bridges in the Northern Cape get upgrade

Nothern Cape - The newly-upgraded Orange River Bridges in Keimoes, Northern Cape is set to officially open on Wednesday, 2 April 2014.

Transport Minister, Honourable Dipuo Peters will do the official opening.

Situated on the R27 in the Kai Garib Municipality, the newly-improved bridges form part of government’s continued roll-out and provision of much needed transport and economic infrastructure and help to improve the lives of communities economically and aims to reduce deaths on South African roads.

Bridge design
The four single lane bridges have been widened and improved to provide for safer and better pedestrian walking, cycling and motorist benefit.  The improved bridges now provide for two-way traffic and accommodate high levels of river flow during heavy rains.

Importance of R27 route
The R27 is an important local and national strategic route as it provides access to Namibia and Botswana and main access to National Parks. It is also an important freight route for the transportation of export quality products and an important tourism route.
Joining the Minister during the official opening of the Orange River Bridges will be Northern Cape Premier, Her Excellency Sylvia Lucas and the provincial and Municipal leadership, SANRAL CEO Nazir Alli, senior national, provincial and Municipal officials, key transport stakeholders, members of the community and the media.

Date:             Wednesday, 2 April 2014
Time:             11:00am
Venue:     Kai Garib Municipality, Hoofstraat, Keimoes, and later
Keimoes Sports Ground for community event.
