A South African photographer has been named BBC Worldwide and The Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Take a look at these spectacular pics.

Pretoria -  A birthday celebration went horribly wrong after a family witnessed a savage attack on their tour guide by a leopard at a wildlife estate in Pretoria.

Pretoria News reports the attack took place at the Farm Inn wildlife estate, east of Pretoria, when three groups of tourists where out on an open-air safari game drive.

The report states the leopard caught the 21-year-old guide unawares after it apparently escaped from an enclosure over the weekend.

Dan Rinck, one of the family members explained how their party tried to get the animal off the guide by throwing a cement brick, sticks and other objects at it but it refused to let go.

He said the ranger was lying on his back, the full weight of the animal on him and his face covered in blood. It was only after they threw water at the cat that it moved off.

The ranger was rushed to a hospital east of Pretoria - with severe facial and head injuries.

News24 Travel contacted the Wildlife Estate for further information on both the ranger and the leopard but they were unavailable for comment.
