White rhino charges Kruger tourists

2012-11-13 16:04
Skukuza - A German woman was injured after a white rhino cow charged at a group of tourists in the Kruger National Park, SANParks said on Tuesday.

Park rangers spotted the cow and her calf while the group was taking a morning walk 1km outside the Wolhuter Trail camp on Monday, and tried to chase the animals away, but to no avail.

The cow charged at the German tourist, who had taken cover behind a rock, leaving her with ankle and rib injuries, as well as bruising.

The rangers opened fire to scare off the animal after the attack, but the rhino was injured in the process, although she did manage to get away, SANParks said.

A doctor from Skukuza was airlifted to the scene to assess the woman's injuries, after which she was airlifted to a hospital where she is currently being treated.

In a separate incident, SANParks said that an aggressive elephant charged and overturned a tourist vehicle between the park’s Berg-en-Dal and Skukuza rest camps.

The vehicle's driver sustained knee injuries while attempting to flee, and was treated on the scene by a park doctor.
