Cape Town - While South Africa may be home to some of the most spectacular boutique lodges in Africa, it seems to be a less popular safari destination than a few of our northern neighbours.

CNN Travel reports that according to a poll on the Netherlands-based booking website,, Tanzania comes out tops as a safari destination among international travellers.

Over the past two years a distinctive SafariBookings taskforce searched for those who have been on safari and invited them to write a review. As a result, over 1 000 people from 53 nationalities wrote more than 2 300 user reviews. Apart from this they consulted 756 experts, including guidebook authors from Lonely Planet, Rought Guides and Frommer's among others.

The result: Tanzania is a clear favorite for novice and veteran safari-goers alike.

Tanzania has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including safari favorites the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park, home to millions of wildebeest that form one of the world's most spectacular sights as they migrate the area year-round.

The news comes as welcome affirmation of the country as a tourist destination, after a recent bombing at a rally that killed two in Arusha. That event sparked anxiety among visitors.

Each of the countries were given a rating out of five, with Tanzania scoring 4.84 and South Africa 4.55, in the fifth position. With a score of 4.14, Zimbabwe seems to be the least favourite country toundertake a safari at the moment.
