SA must stop being elitist about tourism

2013-05-30 09:04

Johannesburg - CNN anchor, Richard Quest, has been spending a bit of time in South Africa and appeared on eNCA to discuss tourism growth in the country.

He said that the 10% rise in tourism numbers to 9.2 million in 2012 is a phenomenal success story for South Africa. "Tourism South Africa, the authority has done a blidingly good job for many years in promoting this country," he told anchor, Eleni Giokos.

He added that South Africa should stop being elitist in their outlook on tourists. "You're doing the normal elitism that basically says we'll only take the high spender from Europe North America and Australasia," he said, adding that the real growth numbers lie with the tourists from SADC countries like Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Mozambique.

He also predicted that the UK would only remain SA's top source market for the next three or four years, before being overtaken by the US and China.
