SA scoops top World Travel Awards

Cape Town - South Africa and Kenya have once again proved themselves to be the top tourist destinations on the continent, as both countries raked in numerous accolades at the World Travel Awards - Africa.

Air travel

Starting in the air travel category, South African Airways managed to scoop Africa's Leading Airline, while Kenya Airways was named Africa's Leading Airline for Business Class. OR Tambo International Airport managed to beat Cape Town International, King Shaka International and Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta to be named the top airport in Africa.


As far as destinations are concerned, Cape Town walked away with two accolades, being named Africa's Leading Destination overall as well as the top destination for Meetings and Conferences. Zanzibar was named the top Beach Destination, while the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya received the award for Leading National Park, an accolade Kruger was also nominated for.


In the hotels category, South Africa was strongly represented, winning no less than 12 awards out of 25. These included The Regent (Africa's Leading Apartment Hotel), Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas and Spa (Africa's Leading Boutique Hotel), Sandton Sun (Africa's Leading Business Hotel), The Palazzo at Montecasino (Africa's Leading Casino Resort), Pepperclub Hotel & Spa (Africa's Leading City Hotel), The Westin Cape Town (Africa's Leading Conference Hotel), Sun City Resort (Africa's Leading Family Resort), Legend Golf & Safari Resort (Africa's Leading Golf Resort).

The Taj in Cape Town was named Africa's Leading Hotel Residence, Thanda Private Game Reserve was named Africa's Leading Luxury Lodge and Ellerman House Villa One, Africa's Leading Luxury Villa.


Other notable awards included Africa's Leading Luxury Train for The Blue Train and Africa's Leading Conservation Company for Shamwari Game Reserve. 

Hailed as "The Oscars of the Travel Industry", World Travel Awards celebrates its' 20th Anniversary this year and is acknowledged across the globe as the ultimate travel accolade, an aims to celebrate those brands that are pushing the boundaries of industry excellence.
